GameStop Share Structure

A reconciliation of GameStop's disclosed ownership buckets — insiders, institutional 13F holdings, DRS / Computershare, and a residual brokerage-held + unaccounted bucket — measured against shares outstanding. Every figure comes from a public SEC filing. The contested-theory interpretations live in the community; this page reconciles disclosed numbers, with each caveat surfaced visibly rather than buried.

Four-bucket reconciliation

The DTC bucket above is further reconciled into 13F institutional holdings (Yahoo's aggregate of institutional managers' filings) and a residual brokerage-held + unaccounted bucket. Aggregate insider holdings (from the most recent DEF 14A proxy) and the DRS / Computershare bucket are added separately. Hover the ? on each bucket for the caveat that applies.

GME share structure — FAQ

What is GameStop's share structure?

GameStop discloses two ownership buckets in every 10-Q and 10-K: shares held by Cede & Co (the DTC clearing system — i.e. brokerage / street name) and shares held by registered holders with the transfer agent (Computershare). As of the most recent 10-Q, roughly 86% of outstanding shares are in the DTC bucket and roughly 14% are with the transfer agent.

Why does institutional ownership sometimes appear to exceed the float?

Institutional 13F holdings can legitimately exceed the float without implying synthetic shares: lent shares can be reported by more than one party. Any "sum exceeds float" observation must account for share lending before any conclusion is drawn.

How current is the institutional data?

13F filings are quarterly and 45-day lagged. They capture only institutional managers above the SEC reporting threshold (currently $100M AUM), as of a past quarter-end.

What's the difference between shares outstanding and public float?

Shares outstanding includes insider holdings. Public float excludes them. The reconciliation here uses shares outstanding as the total.

Does this page prove there are naked or synthetic shares?

No. This page reconciles disclosed numbers. The interpretation that disclosed buckets exceeding the float implies naked or synthetic shares is a community interpretation, and is attributed as such.
